Kuwait warns against threatening Iran Mon, 14 Jul 2008 14:22:29 | |
Jassem al-Kharafi said on Kuwaiti television Sunday that threats were not needed to stop Iran from going on with its nuclear program and called for a peaceful diplomatic solution to the issue. The US and Israel have escalated their war rhetoric on Iran, saying that they are prepared to stop its nuclear activities by resorting to military option. He wondered why the West did not investigate Israel's nuclear program, criticizing the US and its allies for their unjust approach. "It is also surprising to see that Israel is being allowed to continue its program while Iran is being asked to stop its nuclear program. Iranian officials have repeatedly assured the international community that the country's nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, not for warfare," he noted. Israel has refused to give access to the UN nuclear watchdog to inspect its nuclear facilities. Instead of dealing with Iran as if it were one of its states, the US has to respect Iran's sovereignty, he added. Accused by the West of seeking a nuclear weapons program, Iran vehemently denies the allegations and calls them baseless. Iran's nuclear program is monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has had the chance of conducting snap inspections of the country's nuclear facilities. AR/GM/BGH |
