Five-day oil strike kicks off in Brazil Mon, 14 Jul 2008 18:04:17 | |
"Of the 42 platforms, 33 are now stopped, said Monday Jose Genivaldo Silva, director of the United Oil Workers' Federation (FUP), an umbrella union, almost one hour into the stoppage, reported Reuters. He said oil extraction would not completely be stopped at the platform and for technical reasons a small quantity would be pumped to avoid losing the well. "You can't stop production. You have to reduce it otherwise you lose the well shaft," he said before the strike got underway. FUP members are due to come together on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of a nationwide strike at all Petrobras facilities. They want a bigger share of the oil revenues for the workers. Operated by the national oil giant Petrobras, the Campos basin produces more than 80 percent of the Latin Country's crude of 1.8 million barrels per day which accounts for around two percent of world supply.
